JESSICA HORTON
We spoke with London-based Jessica Horton, mother of one and founder of interior design studio, Deorling.
What is your job?
I’m the founder of Deorling, a sustainable interior design studio that also specialises in bespoke carpentry and antiques for heritage homes. It’s all about blending classic craftsmanship with antiques, creating spaces that feel warm, timeless, and personal.
What do your nights look like & how do you wind down?
Nights have become a peaceful wind-down time. I love dimming the lights, putting on soft music and having quiet moments with my little one before bed. It’s all about embracing the slower pace and appreciating the present.
What is your pre-sleep routine?
A gentle routine helps me unwind: a warm shower, herbal tea and maybe some calming essential oils. I keep things low-energy, sometimes reading or simply enjoying a quiet moment, to ease into sleep.
What keeps you awake at night?
New ideas and the occasional work-related thought. But I’m learning to let things go, reminding myself that everything has its time, and nights are meant for rest.
How do you manage to switch off from work?
I remind myself that creating a balanced life is essential, especially with a little one. Stepping away and focusing on family or simply being present helps me recharge and return to work with a fresh perspective.
How do you sleep generally?
Pretty well, though as a new mum, I’ve learned to be flexible with sleep. Having a calming environment helps, so I focus on creating a cosy bedroom vibe.
What’s your favourite relaxation tip?
Slow down and breathe. A simple pause with deep breathing does wonders to reset my mind and body, especially during busy days.
What do you look for in your sleepwear?
Comfort is key! I love natural, soft fabrics that feel gentle on the skin, allowing for a cosy, restful sleep.
What’s the first thing you do every morning?
I usually take a quiet moment to set an intention for the day. Then, it’s all about embracing the morning with my little one—it’s the best start.
What does self-care look like to you?
Self-care is all about simplicity and consistency. A cup of tea, a few minutes outdoors, and a calming dog walk can be incredibly grounding.
Why did you decide to start Deorling?
I wanted to create a space that honours the beauty of heritage homes and adds a sense of comfort. Deorling is a blend of passion for design, sustainability, and a love for home—crafting spaces that feel meaningful.
How do you find time to balance running your own business and being a mother?
Balance is a constant dance. I focus on being fully present, whether it’s at work or with family. Embracing help and creating routines has been key in keeping things manageable.
How do you curate a calm, relaxing environment for sleep?
Soft textures, natural tones, and gentle lighting are essential. I also love incorporating plants and subtle scents to create a serene, inviting space.
You are very focused on sustainability - we love that you are a sustainability ambassador - why is this so important to you?
Sustainability connects to the values I want to pass on, both in work and in life. Deorling’s approach is about crafting responsibly and making choices that respect both history and the future.
Favourite HONNA style?
I adore the understated elegance and effortless feel of HONNA’s classic striped sets. They strike the perfect balance of style and comfort.
